Sobelman's Waukesha

Recently, the hubs and I were looking for someplace to go for lunch on the weekend. We have our staples of Culver's, Taco Bell, and Cousins, but I wanted something different. I pulled the discount card off the fridge (thanks to the Waukesha West Baseball team) and saw Sobelman's on there. I convinced the hubs that we should try it as neither of us had been there yet.

The location of Sobelman's in Waukesha has been quite a few things in the past couple of decades. When I went to Carroll, it was Mulligan's, a popular college bar. After my college years, it became a few other bars before becoming a country bar that then turned into Sobelman's. The owners of Sobelman's Waukesha also own Boscos Social Club in downtown and I went to college with one of the owners and had friends in a similar circle. It's awesome to see that they stayed local after college and now have successful businesses in the city.

When we walked into Sobelman's, the first thing I noticed was how different it was from the college days. The bar used to jut out in the room and take up a ton of space. Now the bar is L-shaped allowing for more tables for dining. They added cool rustic lighting with mason jars and lots of local vintage signage.

We grabbed a high top table in the middle of the place and were promptly greeted by our server. We showed our coupon for free cheese balls right away and she told us it was a great choice. I ordered a cherry coke and the hubs ordered a Mt. Dew copycat called Mountain Mist from Dang! That's Good soda company (from Milwaukee!). It wasn't Mt. Dew, but it was still good. And my cherry coke was made with grenadine - delicious.

Sobelman's is known for their awesome burgers and has even made national TV shows with a local burger battle in Milwaukee.  I am a sucker for a Mushroom Swiss burger (my go-to at Culver's) so I had to try theirs. The hubs went for The Hangover (though he didn't have one) and just said no to the onions.

Our cheese balls came out wicked fast and oh man were they good. "No cheese ball left behind" was our mantra because we didn't want any of the cheesy goodness to go to waste. The cheese is breaded in a delicious coating and then deep fried. The ranch that comes with is awesome and the pairing really got our buds going. We ate about half the order before our burgers came.

The burger patties are flatter than other places in Waukesha, but with how they pile on the toppings, you still get a huge sandwich. (Is a burger a sandwich?) The buns are nice and buttery on the outside and soft on the inside. My burger had more mushrooms on it than I have ever gotten and they were sauteed perfectly. The cheese was melty and the whole pairing worked really well. I ate half the sandwich as is, and for the second half, I ate just the burger and toppings because I was too full to eat the bun too. The pickle slices on the side are nice, super crisp, and dilly.

The hubs burger looked amazing - one smush down on the sandwich had the fried egg running all over. He said it was cooked perfectly and it added egg to every bite. The sandwich also had cheese and bacon. He devoured the entire thing and was very impressed.

Our server was extremely attentive and we never ran out of beverages, had plenty of napkins, and she made sure we liked everything we got. She even chatted with us a bit about their other specials and how awesome it is to work for this company. Most servers don't take that kind of time any more or say it nearly as sincerely as she did - so that awesome to hear and something I wanted to relay.

Sobelman's is known for their Bloody Mary's and even has one with an entire fried chicken on top! We didn't try any that day--me, because I'm expecting, and the hubs, because he didn't think he needed a third lunch that day :) (They really can be meals in themselves, can't they?) But we are definitely going to keep this place in mind for lazy Saturdays and invite some friends for Bloody Mary's and a great meal.

They also have wing night on Wednesdays and Fish Fry on Fridays - plenty of reasons for us to go back. And if it wasn't for that coupon to get us in the door the first time, I'm not sure how long it would have taken us to try this gem.

New Year's Eve Happenings in Waukesha

I am actually heading out of town for New Year's this year because I have family in from the East Coast that I haven't seen in a year. But if I wasn't going out of town, I would definitely be hitting up a few of these great New Year's Eve specials in Waukesha. These are what I found, but I know there are more parties and events going on.

Whatever you do, have fun and be safe. Call a cab if you have had too much too drink or follow the rule that I have - no driving (regardless if I drank or not) after 11 pm because after that, the roads aren't safe.

People's Park is offering complimentary appetizers, DJ and balloon drop and you can even reserve a table if you call ahead.

Generations at 5 Points is having Prix Fixe menu, Drink Specials, Champange Toast, Live Music

Boscos Social Club is having a champagne toast, photo booth and balloon drop

Magellans has just completed a remodel and although I don't see anything on their Facebook page (and the website could use some updating) - I'm sure they are going to have something. If anything, grab some pizza before heading out for drinks.

The Lincoln Pub is having a Back to the Eighties Theme with shot specials, costume contest, karaoke and dancing and a champagne toast at midnight. (FYI - this bar is cash only or use the ATM inside)

The Nice Ash will have live music and a champagne toast at midnight.

The Lucky Rabbit will have video mixing by a DJ, champagne toast, $3 domestic beers and cherry bombs all night.

Eric's Porter Haus is having a wonderful menus for the evening.  Lobster, crab legs and filets, oh my!

The Rox Bar is having drink and shot specials all night, food until 10 pm and champagne at midnight.

Cue Club of Wisconsin is having a DJ, drink specials, champagne toast and free shuttles home starting at midnight.

Boscos Social Club

When I think of bars that I want to go to for a beer or cocktail in a fun atmosphere, Boscos Social Club almost always pops in mind right away. This place has been in downtown Waukesha since 2011 and has been constantly evolving and changing.

I actually went to college (and hung out on occasion) with the owner Jimmy and am glad that he stayed local and has opened two businesses in town (Spurs Saloon)

This building housed a lot of different bars before Boscos, but I never frequented those.  I believe the best addition they made to the place is the awesome "backyard." They have three covered outdoor patios with large flatscreens to watch all the major sporting events on. There is even a heat lamp for the colder nights. They also have an area of uncovered chairs and tables, a tree, an outdoor bar (so you don't have to go back inside) and an area for bags and other yard games to be played. The entire area is strung with bistro lights, making it a very fun and inviting atmosphere.

Recently, they tore down a raised seating area inside the bar to make it more accessible for larger crowds and put in a wall length booth seat with tables and fancy chairs for a lounge feel. I love the cool light fixtures they have in the bar.

There are a few hightop tables that can be moved for when they have a DJ and want to dance the night away.

The bar also boasts a digital jukebox, dart boards and the "dog wall" - my favorite. They have a wall covered in pictures of dogs that are framed up.

The selection of alcohol and beer is very extensive and something is on special every day! The bar even has two Shot-ski's hanging behind it but I haven't seen those used yet.

They offer free popcorn to the customers as well, which we enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon recently.

And they really out do themselves for seasonal decorations every year. Halloween is the one I see that they go to the extreme. But I have also seen Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, Easter and more.

We have made this a destination for a few Halloween Pub Crawls through town in recent years.

They offer specials during Packer games and have Emil's pizza available for purchase too--I recommend the Cheeseburger pizza!

This is a bar that does draw the college age crowd and gets extremely busy in the later evenings. So if you don't like larger crowds, just come early! It's worth a stop to see what this place is all about. You won't be disappointed.

Boscos also recently opened Spurs Saloon on Williams Street in Waukesha - by La Estacion and Club 400. I haven't stopped in yet but I hope to soon and see how much the place has changed since my college days of it being Mulligans.

The Lucky Rabbit

Last week Tuesday, I had plans to go to a beer dinner at Bernie's Tap Room with a few friends but due to circumstances outside of Bernie's control, the dinner had to be cancelled. We are patiently awaiting the next dinner and hope it's a great brewery they feature!!

But we didn't want to cancel our plans of a night out, so we started thinking of a different place to try. I have been going on a lot of walks on my lunches and noticed a sign outside of The Lucky Rabbit on St. Paul and Madison offering $2 taps and $2 pizzas on Tuesdays. I was curious about this and suggested it to my friends and they thought we should try it out.

We met up at 6:30 and found some comfy lounge chairs inside the bar and sat down for the evening. The owners of The Lucky Rabbit have done a fantastic job rehabbing the place from what was once a place I never wanted to go into with a sketchy crowd, to a modern, young and fun place bar. It's painted orange on the inside with a very cool wooden soffit that adds architecture and ambiance. There is a stage for the DJ or band to play on, lounge seating, high-top tables, and lots of seating at the bar.

A very friendly server came over right away and explained the drink and food specials for the night. $2 domestic taps, (they have quite a selection of craft and imports on tap as well) and $2 pizzas that are 9" hand tossed or thin crust with 1 meat and 2 veggies on top. Also, the jumbo pretzels were $2 that night as well. We ordered drinks and took a look at all the different topping choices we could get on the pizza while we waited for the drinks to come back.

My friend Brandon saw they had Pumpking on tap and if you haven't had this pumpkin beer, it's a must! It's like pumpkin pie in liquid form - so yummy! I had to have one or two of those with my pizza.

We all decided on pizzas and Tiffany ordered us some garlic toast as well. The garlic toast came out quickly and was 5 pieces of french bread lightly coated with a garlic butter/oil spread and marinara for dipping. The bread was cut thin and toasted to a nice golden crisp - just the way I like it. And the marinara was pretty excellent too! We could have gotten by with one order, but the server wasn't sure how many pieces came per order so we went with two to be safe.

Then the pizzas came out. We all ended up with thin crust on accident but for $2, I wasn't gonna complain. And they were delicious! I probably shouldn't have eaten the whole thing and garlic bread too but it was so good. The marinara has great flavor and they are generous with the toppings.

 Sausage, Black Olive & Mushroom

 Pepperoni, Pineapple and Banana Peppers
Green Olive, Tomato and ? - This one was just three veggies
 Pepperoni, Black Olive and Onion

We ate, chatted, watched the Yankees game (Funny that the Brewers weren't on any of their TVs though they were playing that night - oh well - we watched one of Jeter's last games at least).
I have been friends with this guy since preschool and I'm glad that we can still meet up and hang out. We hope to meet up again soon and do another dinner out.

The Lucky Rabbit also does brunch on Saturdays & Sundays. They are advertising Breakfast and a Bloody for $10 currently. I don't like Bloodys but the breakfast options look pretty good to me! Since this place is owned by the same folks that own Fuzzy's, which has amazing breakfast, I'm sure it's top notch food. Maybe they will sub a mimosa or other morning cocktail  for this girl!

I'll have to watch what specials they run other nights, but I definitely want to go back for more pizza.

Bernie's Tap Room and Downtown Waukesha

I had a date Friday night and I introduced him to Bernie's Tap Room and the Duck Confit and BBQ pizzas/flatbreads. The BBQ pizza was new to me and I think what makes Bernie's pizzas/flatbreads so outstanding is the super crispy and thin crust. I made another fan of the duck pizza and I WILL figure out the white sauce so I can try my darndest to make this at home. We took two slices of the BBQ pizza home to not be glutinous but it was really, really good.

My date was even lucky enough to score me some duck so I can try cooking it myself too! Any suggestions on cooking duck?

Bernie's was hopping with people and the musician was just sitting down to start his first set. I took a double take and realized it was Mike Mann formerly from ManDown, a Milwaukee acoustic guitar coverband. In the mid-2000s, my cousin and I loved seeing them and we would go to whatever bars they were at because we were sure to have fun. Call us groupies or whatever but those guys knew how to rock it the southern rock way. It was great to see Mike still out playing and still rocking it. I didn't have a chance to say hi, but I'm sure I'll see him around again.

Then I showed my date around downtown and pointed out some of my favorite stops: People's Park, Nice Ash where my friend Kacey seemed to fly out of the bar to say hi to me, Poppin' on Broadway, Jackson's, Bosco's and Steaming Cup.

And then I tripped over the barricade in the road....... :(

Nope, wasn't drunk, it just was really dark and I didn't see how far it was sticking out. Luckily my date kept me from falling completely over but whew - be careful out there folks. Road construction is the pits! (I will probably change it to the barricade jumped out at me in future retells of this date!)

My date was not from around here, so I'm glad he was able to see that Waukesha isn't a bunch of one-way streets that you can't get around (yep that's what he thought) and it has lots to offer. And he wasn't detered by the minor construction with me as such a great navigator for his first time in downtown. He has only been to downtown Waukesha one other time getting sausages for his dad's birthday surprise from Jimmy's Grotto. He is now a fan of Bernie's and I hope to make him a fan of many other places as well (regardless how the dating stuff works out!)

Cue Club of Wisconsin

From CueClubofWI.com

Now that I live on the north end of Waukesha, the Cue Club of Wisconsin (formerly Master Z's, formerly Sharkey's) is really close for me to go for a drink or a bite with friends.

A few weeks ago, my friend Kacey and I went to get a few drinks late on a Friday night. We got to Cue Club around 9 and they were just tearing down from the Fish Fry (that is pretty tasty!). We grabbed a table between the bar and darts area/dance floor. An employee was plugging the Jukebox back in and I was excited to play a few songs and just relax and catch up with Kacey.

But then I saw a DJ come in and start setting up in the booth. I didn't mind the music selection that began around 10, but the volume was almost obnoxious. If you haven't been the Cue Club, the bar is divided and 1/3 is bar/darts/seating and the other side is pool and Foosball. I'm sure if you are playing pool, the volume was OK, but for those in the bar area, we were screaming to carry on a conversation. And for the fact that no one was dancing or singing along, it seemed exceptionally loud as "background music."

We persevered through and took advantage of the Beat the Clock special (really a roll back the clock special.) Starting at 10 pm, every half hour drink prices go down $.50. Not a bad deal for a Friday night at all. Most bars don't have a special on Fridays, so this was nice to find out.

Fast forward to this week, and I invited a bunch of friends over for Mardi Gras. We decided after a drink at my place to take advantage of $2 Tuesdays. According to the website, it's $2 rails, calls, drinks and beer. I'm sure there are some exceptions to the rule, but the place was pretty busy. $2 drinks are made in a smaller plastic cup instead of a pint glass, but for just $2, it's a great deal.

We got there around 8 and put in our food orders. There wasn't a server on for the bar tables, so we had to squeeze in around the bar, flag down a bartender and then watch for the food to pop up by them. It was a little confusing with the bar being so crowded, but it worked. And the food came out really fast!

I ordered the BBQ Brisket sandwich. The bun was a hoagie and unfortunately could not hold the weight of all the brisket. A lot of it fell off the bun right away and the bun got super soggy (toast your buns people!). But the coleslaw on the sandwich was a nice crunchy addition. The pub fries are deliciously crispy outside and mushy soft in the inside. All sandwiches come with a pickle and a candy bar, however Tory's spicy buffalo chicken wrap came with neither and she was bummed.

Her wrap was quite spicy but she did enjoy it and it was rather large. A few others ordered burgers that looked fabulous and by how quickly the baskets were emptied, I can only imagine they tasted wonderfully. Tiffany ordered the fish sandwich and chicken bites. She too was almost a member of the clean plate club so I believe it was a successful outing for us all.

$2 Tuesdays also extends to the pool area. $2 per hour of play. The pool tables were pretty full but we did snag the one close to us and a few people played. I couldn't get over how many men were crowded around the foosball tables. I personally don't find that game as exciting but I guess you can get a lot of people to play for 2 hours and cost just $.25 each guy.

We will definitely head back to Cue Club and take advantage of a few other specials they have. For a sandwich, some beers and good music from the Jukebox this time, I only spent $15 plus tip. That's a good price for me and it was a good night!

The Fish Fry is really good and I like that they have the small fish fry option as well. My mom found this to be the perfect size meal for her. The only issue is the only side it comes with is waffle fries. I wish there were more options or I'll order a different appetizer to have more variety next time. During Lent, the fish fry is available on Wed. and Fri. from noon - 10 pm.  Definitely check it this place out!

Fuzzy's for Brunch

I have heard so many great things about Fuzzy's breakfast and I love that they update their Facebook page the day before with the specials for the next day. I asked my friend Tiffany to come with me to brunch one Sunday morning a few weeks back and we are so glad we went.

As I figured, the parking lot was crowded and so was the inside. There was a waiting list for a table, but some nice folks already waiting informed us about two seats at the bar if we didn't mind eating there.

We took them up on the offer and took the seats. We were instantly greeted by a happy bartender and offered menus. I couldn't decide what I wanted to drink because it was 11 am. Beer didn't sound right and I'm not a Bloody Mary person. I didn't think a mimosa was an option, so I started running down a list of breakfast-y drinks - grapefruit vodka grapefruit juice, citrus vodka with OJ, X-Rated and Sprite, and I decided on the latter. X-Rated is fruity enough that I figured it would work and I am allergic to Vitamin C so the rest I couldn't enjoy until I had my meal.

Tiffany got a Bloody Mary and it came stuff with stuff and as you can see from the picture, it was pretty good. I had a sip, but I am not a big fan of them. It seemed to have enough kick and good flavor, but I just can't drink a whole one. That seemed to the be the popular drink of the morning as the bartenders were mixing them up left and right. I forgot to consider a Baileys and coffee but I wasn't really in the mood for something warm.

Fuzzy's serves breakfast until 3 pm and has a multitude of options. I decided on the Pecan French Toast and Tiffany went for the Eggs Benedict.

We had some time to chat and saw other food come out of the kitchen which all looked really good. People kept coming in and tables were turning over pretty quickly. Olympic ski jumping was on the TV so we were entertained by that while we waited. Some other folks asked me about my drink and I gladly shared with them what I was having and that it was a nice and fruity!

And then the food came!!! My Pecan French Toast was on cinnamon bread - even more amazing that I thought it would be and Tiffany's Eggs Benedict looked rich and delicious. They weren't shy on the pecans and I could only eat two of the four pieces. Of course I ate all the sausage. There is just something about a sausage link that I either love or hate. These were the love kind - not too fatty and good flavor. The French Toast was spectacular and spurred my creation of stuffed mini French Toast. It really doesn't get much better than this!

We swapped bites so we could try each others. The 'famous' cheese sauce was excellent, the eggs weren't too runny and the English muffin was crispy like it was toasted on the griddle. It was definitely indulgent, but I know why Tiffany went for it!

Tiffany and I have eaten sandwiches at Fuzzy's before, but I definitely have to keep this place in mind more often. The food is really great. Sitting at the bar did give us a front row seat for some bartender gossip that, for some patrons, could be a bit much. But as someone that has served, there are just times where you have to say what you have to say and get it done with. It definitely wasn't anything that would keep me away from the place.

They have specials every day of the week, so I think I'll be back to check out the tacos or pizza soon. Also, they have a sister bar, Lucky Rabbit, on the corner of Madison and St. Paul that I have been meaning to check out. The table top menus are facing out when I walk by on my lunch (smart planning!) and I see they make pizzas so I will definitely have to see if they can top Magellans, my favorite in Waukesha.

More Waukesha Holiday Happenings

Wow is November flying by and I'm seeing more and more places getting into the Holiday spirit.

And what a better way to kickoff the holidays than with breaking a Guinness Book of World Records for most people caroling at the same time. Arrive by 5:30 at the Rotunda to register to be a part of this great event. The Waukesha Silver Bells page has all the details and list of carols to be sung. Unfortunately I already have plans and am unable to attend but I will be anxiously waiting to hear the results.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, Three Sisters' Uniquities (now located on the west end of Main Street) will have the Fairy Godmothers around for fun and they are teaming up with a few other businesses on the west end for a great day.

From their email:
Saturday, November 23rd is also our "HO-HO-HO" Saturday and we're joining with our neighbors,

Restyle Studio, Moxie Beauty Loungeand Waukesha Tattoo Company to kick off the festive season  "West End (Main Street) Style"!!

Then Sunday is the 51st Annual Christmas Parade in Downtown Waukesha. I will definitely be in attendance for this! I did hear it was going to be cold, so I might be in Bernie's a bit earlier this year than in the past, but I plan to be there. Parade starts at 4 pm and goes right down Main Street. I see on the City's Chamber Facebook page there are some new fun additions to the parade including the "Jingle Bops!" There are 87 entries in the parade this year!!!!

Here are a few other things that I found online that are coming up in Waukesha.

Tuscan Hall that is owned by Christina's restuarant is having an Open House tomorrow from 6 - 9 pm and all are welcome. Help welcome them to the neighborhood!

Jackson's Blue Ribbon Pub is having their Grand Opening on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 pm. Free food, drink specials and live music. Let's welcome them to the neighborhood as I think they are a great addition.

Key Westconsin has live music by Kimberly Brown on Saturday, Nov. 23. Music starts at 6:30 pm.

Energize Zone Wellness Center is having a Countdown to Christmas Craft & Vendor Fair on Dec. 7 from 10 am - 3 pm. Details on the Facebook page.

The Lucky Rabbit is having some live music: Robert Allen Jr. on 12/7 and DJ Devast8 on 12/13

Carroll University presents Silent Night, a concert at Shattuck Auditorium on Dec. 7 & 8.

Boscos Social Club is having an Ugly Sweater Party & Contest on 12/14. Prizes, giveaways and another Facebook contest!

So much fun going on in our city, I just love it. If I missed something, please comment or email me and let me know. I am hoping to get out a weekly update from now until Xmas with all the events that are going on!

November is Busy!

With the holidays right around the corner, I feel the amount of foodie opportunities seem to increase. I don't mind it one bit - but the wallet gets a little upset. So here is a recap and moving forward of some of my experiences.

Friday I had a meeting on the east side of Waukesha and after, I introduced my coworkers to Andrea's Red Rooster. I used to work there way back in the day and have gone a few times for drinks on the patio over the summer, but never for lunch. The food was great and we found another great spot. More on this place soon!

Then, Friday evening, I convinced my parents to check out Jackson's Blue Ribbon Pub in Waukesha and we were very impressed. It's new and has a few kinks to work out, but those kinks don't affect the food (which is the whole point of me going.) I'll write more on that soon, but here is my fish fry from Friday.
Saturday, I went to the Best of the Best Bridal Show with my friend Shauna that is getting married in August (and I'm her Maid of Honor!!!). I tried a mini almond flavored cupcake with raspberry filling and it was heavenly. I have to seek out the name of the vendor and then I will share it with you all - definitely recommend her desserts.

After the show, I met my boyfriend and his friends at Fox Run Lanes, a little bar off of Sunset that we used to go to all the time when I worked at Fox Run Sentry Liquor. Now we go maybe once every few weeks, but I have made quite a few appearances lately (Thursday, Saturday and going again tonight!)

The drinks are made usually decently strong, the beer selection is a solid variety and the food is excellent. It's not just your typical bar food. Sure they have mozzarella sticks and cheese curds, but they have burgers, chili, pizza, wings, chicken wraps and more. We got a pizza and the crust and sauce are excellent. It seemed to have a lot of cheese on it, but we didn't complain. We had plenty of leftovers as well to enjoy later in the day.

Sunday, I made a veggie pasta dish for during the Packer game, and although I make this meal a lot, I think I need to add the cheese later in the process as it all melts away and you lose the flavor. But Tim really enjoyed it and that is what matters. More on this recipe soon!

And I picked up some of my favorite cookies from my childhood - Melody Cookies from Milwaukee's south side. The spritz cookies bring me back to stealing them out of my grandma's cookie jar when I would visit her. They have a nice buttery taste. People might be getting these from me for the holidays :)
Tonight, I'm heading to Fox Run again for wings and saying goodbye to a friend as she moves back up to Green Bay. We will definitely be staying in touch and road trips are already being planned.

Tuesday, I scored two tickets to the Taste of Home Cooking School at Waukesha Expo tomorrow. My friend Tiffany and I are going to learn some holiday recipes and try some food.

Wednesday, I am meeting up with my grade school girls at BW3s in New Berlin. I haven't seen some of them since Confirmation retreat and maybe even earlier. We have about 6 of us going and I'm so excited for fun conversation, good eats and plentiful drinks :)

November 26, I'm attending a Special Holiday Cheese Event at Clock Shadow Creamery (Hello yummy  Quark cheese!!) I'm going to learn how to create the best holiday cheese spread for my guests and more! So excited.

Then, in just a few weeks is the MKEFoodies, Cookies for Kids Cancer Bake Sale. Mark down Dec. 7 as the date to some buy treats from Milwaukee's blogger community and support a great cause.
